This research is a five-season investigation into injury epidemiology in professional ballet. The aim was to report the incidence rate, severity, burden, and aetiology of medical attention and time-loss injuries at The Royal Ballet. This is the first study in professional ballet to report medical attention injury incidence rates, providing practitioners with an understanding of the wider medical burden in this population. The results of this study may inform the design of targeted injury prevention programs focusing on senior company ranks, intra-season variation, and jumping and landing activities in professional ballet dancers.
Smartabase was used to collect all of the injury and rehearsal data that was used in this study.
