HUMAN PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION TECH STACK OVERVIEW

Over the past few years, the number of human performance technologies on the market has exploded.

For other sectors, analysts like Gartner and Forrester have created the Magic Quadrant, Wave, and other market research reports to help potential buyers simplify their purchasing options for business intelligence (BI), content management, and other kinds of technology. In sales and marketing, the Martech 5000 has organized the landscape and helps sales and marketing leaders make informed choices based on the type of tech they’re looking for.

To help sports teams, colleges and universities, governing bodies, Olympic committees, military units, and other organizations do the same, we’ve created the first Human Performance Optimization (HPO) Technology Stack. The beta version of the HPO Tech Stack organizes nearly 300 human performance technologies into outcome-focused categories. In this article, we’ll cover what it is, why we created it, how you can use it, and a simple way to help us improve it.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION: OPPORTUNITY & CHALLENGES

The proliferation of apps, wearables, and other technologies in the human performance space offers exciting new opportunities to improve athlete performance, health, and wellbeing. But the sheer number of choices plus the noise, hype, and fads surrounding this ever-expanding list of tools make it harder than ever to select the right options that fit with your organization’s goals, needs, and values.

Working closely with human performance leaders around the globe for the past decade, we’ve seen firsthand how much complexity our clients face in their decision-making process and have made it our mission to help guide them through the maze of the latest technology and make sound choices.

We realized that it wasn’t enough to do this one-on-one, and that we could share our team’s expertise at scale, provide thought leadership in the industry, and better serve the kind of organizations we help on a daily basis if we created the Human Performance Optimization Tech Stack.

CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE PLANS FOR THE HPO TECH STACK

Like we did with the Human Performance Maturity Model, we started the HPO Tech Stack project with a select group of Fusion Sport staff who help sports, military, and other high-performance organizations select the right integrations for their Smartabase athlete management system (AMS) on a daily basis. Then we opened up the process to a wider number of our staff, the industry experts who make up our advisory council, and a selection of partners and customers who we consider to be thought leaders in the human performance space.

As with the other resources we’ve created – such as the Human Performance Maturity Model – we want the ongoing evolution of this Tech Stack to be a collaborative project. With this in mind, we’d welcome your input on which vendors and products are missing, if existing ones need to be placed in different or additional categories, and whether we should create new buckets to better represent the technology available in the marketplace. Our goal? Creating a highly usable tool that helps bring a greater level of transparency and clarity to the human performance industry.

We plan to release a new version of the HPO Tech Stack at least once a year. With your help, we can create and maintain a resource that helps all stakeholders in our industry – especially the athletes and service members we collectively support.

HOW TO USE AND IMPROVE THE HUMAN PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION TECH STACK

This recent explosion of software, apps, wearables, devices, and equipment means there’s a pressing need for tools that map the landscape and help you make more strategic decisions so your organization derives the greatest value from its HPO technology investments. The aim of the Human Performance Optimization Tech Stack is to improve the order of operations organizations like yours run through when comparing, evaluating, selecting, testing, and implementing technology solutions.

This begins with being able to take a 30,000-foot view of the entire market to see all of the options currently available. Then, to start refining and narrowing your search by seeing these placed in relevant categories that match up with the various specialties and domains. Once you begin identifying multiple individual options that might best fit your organizational needs, strategies, and plans, you can then consider how these components will start to comprise a more complete technology stack.
